Records broken at Glasgow to Edinburgh

There were over 700 runners that took place on the start line for the most recent edition of the Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra by GB ultras, all preparing for their 57 mile adventure through Scotland.

Following canal towpaths, the Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra (G2E) connects the two major cities visiting highlights like Falkirk Wheel and the Antonine Wall, the Northernmost point of the Roman Empire.

As the final race of the GB Ultras series, many who participate have taken part in other races to complete their Grand slam series. This is the event organisers ultimate challenge where participants must complete at least five of their eight 50-mile races.

Male Record Broken

The male record was broken by Joe Beaton, who took overall first and male first, coming in at 6:25:21, which is just under 25 minutes faster than the previous record. This meant he was travelling with an average pace of 4:12 km/h (6:46 m/h).

He was followed by Scotsman Sage Pearce-Higgins (6:30:04) and Adam Rouse (7:02:18) to complete the male podium.

Speaking at the finish line Joe said to Ridgeline Media: “It was tough out there, it was quite humid; I ran hard from the start. The emotions are happy, shocked and over the moon to be honest.

“It was flat, it was fast and it was mentally tough. But it was one of the best routes I think you could do an ultra event on.”

Female Record Smashed

Sara Eydmann took first female and sixth overall place with an astonishing time of 7:39:57, shaving almost 50 minutes from the previous record. Her average pace per kilometre was 5:01 k/h (8:04 m/h).

Upon finishing and holding her medal and trophy proudly she said: “My training really paid off and I feel really strong and positive. It’s been a massive boost for the future as well.

“I think having a channel for my running has been so beneficial for me, sometimes it’s hard juggling that with life; I’m so grateful that this year has been amazing and it’s opened doors to my future of running.”

German athlete Annette Rudolph took second place in 8:11:49 with Emma Coffey finishing the female podium in 8:20:07.
