Carol Morgan takes new Wainwright’s Record

Irish ultrarunner Carol Morgan is best known for completing non-stop mountain ultramarathons with first place positions at exceptional races like The Montane Winter SPine Race (2018), Cape Wrath Ultra and the Dragons Back (2017).

However, she now has broken the record books, setting a new record for the Winter Wainwright Round, smashing the previous record by 5 hours.

Carol completed the 350-mile 118,000ft ascent challenge in 193 hours, 51 mins and 47 secs. Carol completed the supported female round, finishing on the 3rd of January 2025.

In her own words after finishing and achieving a new best time “…….not too bad for an old woman”

The Wainwrights are named after Alfred Wainwright, a British fell walker who was passionate about the Lake District. He published a collection of books documenting the area’s peaks. The Wainwrights’ difficulty varies, with some being easy and family-friendly and others more challenging.

The round consists of completing all of the Wainwright 214 peaks back-to-back. Some of these include Black Fell, Castle Crag, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, and Helvellyn.

The current overall record was set by John Kelly in 2022 in 5 days, 12 hours and 14 minutes.
