It can be easy to forget that the UK is home to some of Europe’s most beautiful mountainous regions, including the Lake District, Snowdonia National Park, and the Scottish Highlands.
Some of the best Mountain Ultras could be just beyond your back door, so before you go jet-setting off to the Alps or Colorado mountains, look at these incredible races in the UK.
The Montane Lakeland 50 and Lakeland 100 are often received as the epitome of British ultramarathon races. Set amongst the magnificent background of the Lake District, the races follow routes visiting some of your favourite aspects of the Lakelands, including Coniston, Dalemain and Ambleside.
The circular 100-mile route encompasses Lakeland Falls, includes an ascent of approximately 6,300m and consists almost entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. Lakeland 50 is ‘half of the 100-mile course’; it’s nearly double the distance of a marathon on rough terrain, and there’s approximately 3100m of ascent to deal with.
This point-to-point coastal race may make you believe it isn’t a hilly event; completing it is no easy feat. Situated on the South West Coastal Path, this winter race combines rugged terrain with undulating cliff paths and edges. There are three distances: Arc 100 (160km), Arc 50 (80km) and Arc 25 (40km).
While the National Snowdonia Park is world-renowned for its challenging terrain and famous peak, Yr Wydffa, the Ultra Trail Snowdonia is the highlight of the race calendar. Inviting some of the best racers from around the world, the 100-mile distance encompasses an accumulative ascent total of 9,500m.

If you’re looking for a challenge that will also challenge your mental resilience and inner strength, look no further than the Race Across Scotland. Traversing the length of the Southern Upland Way, the route covers 215 miles, with supported checkpoints throughout. Take on this breathtaking Scottish National trail from the beautiful coastline of Portpatrick, over the mountains, along the valleys, through the forests of the Southern Uplands and along trails steeped in history.
Dragon’s Back Race
The Montane Dragon’s Back Race is a legendary 360km stage race over 6 days. Beginning in Conway Castle, the route is inspired by the 1992 race, in which the inaugural Dragons tackled Wales’ uniquely wild, trackless, and remote mountainous terrain.
The race has been described as an incredible test of physical and mental ability. Over six days, it has accumulated around 16,400m of ascent.
